With more than 1 million albums sold worldwide and an impressive track record that heralds them as the fastest-selling debut artist in the 26-year history of Sparrow Records, ZOEgirl has managed to create a success story that continues to get bigger and bigger with the release of each new album. Performances at venues like New York's Madison Square Garden, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Walt Disney World have helped ZOEgirl become one of the top female pop groups in Christian musica platform upon which Chrissy Conway, Alisa Girard and Kristin Swinford keep building brick by brick.

ZOEgirl exploded onto the scene in 2000 with the group's self-titled debut, scoring four Top 5 radio hits. They followed with a sophomore album, Life, which continued to propel the girls' blossoming career. Those first two projects placed ZOEgirl in front of hundreds of thousands of fans on stage with artists such as Newsboys, Plus One, Avalon and Carman. Following the late 2003 release of their last album, Different Kind Of FREE, ZOEgirl hit the ground running as a featured artist on the 25-city Shoutfest tour before heading out on their first headlining tour in early 2004. The FREE Experience tour, which also featured Superchick, Joy Williams and Focus on the Family speaker Susie Shellenberger, was a huge success with audiences across the country. The FREE Experience tour saw sell-out attendances in many markets during a year when the touring industry was taking a hard hit.

Now, with Room To Breathe, their first new album in over a year, ZOEgirl is moving forward with some of the most compelling music of their career. Produced by Mark Heimermann, "Double Dutch"(Robert Marvin), Josiah Bell, Shawn Shankel, Tedd T and Dan Muckala, Room To Breathe encompasses ZOEgirl's growth as singers, songwriters, artists and women. "I think with each album we've been able to integrate more and more of who we are," Alisa says. "We've really seen a need and have been trying to fill that void for young girls to have a different option when it comes to pop music, and we've done it without trying to fit into any kind of mold or demographic. I think we've just really focused in on who our listeners are and what they want to hear."

As every recording artist knows, longevity does not come easily in a fast-paced music industry that is constantly chasing the next big trend. But ZOEgirl's biggest accomplishment is their unending ability to connect with their fans around the world. "Our audience is constantly expanding," says Chrissy. "We've got younger girls, teenagers (including boys!), and parents coming to all of our shows and they are having a great time. We've had some great conversations with them and we really love getting their feedback."

That feedbackwhether it comes through letters, after-show meetings or one-on-one time spent with young girls on recent mission tripstranslates into some of the real life moments Chrissy, Alisa and Kristin write about on their albums. Room To Breathe captures those poignant moments that come straight from the heart.

Filled with soaring harmonies and brimming with a personal style that is quintessentially their own, the CD's tracks include the album's first radio single, "About You," an up-tempo pop melody about learning to take the focus off yourself and make it all about God. "Dead Serious," the track ZOEgirl calls the most fun song on the album, is a tribute to "all of those kids who really are standing up for what they believe, even though it's not always the most popular thing to do," Kristin explains.

The album's title is pulled from a song called "The Way You Love Me," written by Chrissy and songwriter Lynn Nichols. "This song talks about how it's so unfathomable to realize how much God loves us despite what we do every day," Chrissy explains. "We can't ever fully grasp how he could love us so much that he died for us. The lyrics say, You gave me room to breathe, a place to get away. I'm standing in your presence with a debt I can't repay.'"

One of the album's most honest and affecting songs is "Scream," a lyric and music written by Alisa and inspired in part by some painfully revealing stories told by girls the group met on the road and while on a mission trip. "There are girls out there who admit to all kinds of self-destructive behaviors like eating disorders, drug abuse, drinking and cutting themselves out of a desperate need to numb the pain and cry out for help," Alisa shares.

Does anybody know how I feel? Sometimes I'm numb; sometimes I'm overcome...Do I have to scream for you to hear me? Do I have to bleed for you to see me? Because I grieve and you're not listening to me.

The song was a shower of emotions for Alisa, who was jointly inspired by hearing the deep hurts shared by the girls she'd met, and in honestly grieving her own personal pain and dealing with depression. "It took me two hours to write the whole song, and it was as if in that two hours I went through the pain of it and the healing of it. It was as if God just poured it out of me. It was so powerful."

Having traveled on summer mission trips for the past two years, Chrissy, Alisa and Kristin have gained a renewed passion and vision to reach the world. As part of that effort, they have launched ZOEgirl Missions, a way to partner with their listeners in reaching out to areas in need. The first official ZOEgirl Missions trip took place last summer in Quito, Ecuador. Partnering with Big World Ventures, ZOEgirl took a missions group to visit retirement homes, play with children in orphanages, perform drama and music, and participate in various work and building projects for churches in Quito.

This July, ZOEgirl is planning a second trip to Ecuador, partnering again with Big World Ventures, and taking various teams with specific gifts. Chrissy, Alisa and Kristin will bring with them construction teams, music and worship teams, and teams that will visit nursing homes and orphanages. They will spend time with the residents, nurturing and serving them with whatever they need, whether it's a haircut, a hug, or someone to sit with them and hold their hand. It's ZOEgirl's hope that they will touch those who experience so little human touch.

"If we hadn't done these trips we wouldn't be the group we are now," says Alisa. "The girls who have gone on these trips have inspired more songs than they know."

"These trips have really opened my eyes to the world," Chrissy adds. "It has given me a new appreciation for life and has taught me so much in the process."

Glancing back, in the rearview mirror of their career, it's the relationships they build, the lives they touch and the impact they make for Christ that fuels this trio of women more than anything else.

"At the end of the day, in 20 years, I want to get a letter that says, I gave my heart to Jesus at a ZOEgirl concert,'" Alisa says. "To me, that's success. It's great to sell albums and win awards, but we aren't truly successful if we aren't leading people to heaven. That's eternal."

Chrissy adds, "If we were remembered for anything else it wouldn't seem like we had fulfilled what we know God has called us to do."

More Info on ZOEgirl

ZOEgirl are three young women who have something going on. Something major, memorable, and perfectly made for this moment in time. From punchy, irresistibly hooky pop to heart-rending ballads, ZOEgirl Alisa Girard, Kristin Swinford and Chrissy Conway have delivered one of the year's great albums, poised to explode from one end of the radio dial to the other.

But where some acts almost seem to treat lyrics as an afterthought, ZOEgirl, who wrote or co-wrote all of the album's 11 cuts, have as strong a sense of purpose about their message as they do the flair, fun and high energy with which they present it. We hope to deliver the same quality, production, and visuals as much as the teen-centered pop that is in the market, says Alisa, but for the sole purpose of bringing young people the message of encouragement and ultimately, salvation.

Of course, presenting the salvation of Christ is the ultimate message any Christian has to convey to the world, she adds. But for kids who may not understand that yet, or be ready for it, we can still present the idea and the image that it's OK to have values and morals. It can be perfectly cool to stand up for what you believe and not just copy whoever is around you.

The rousing, radio-ready anthem, I Believe, is a bold, straightforward statement of faith in God. We really wanted this album to say something, says Alisa, the song's writer. I Believe states very clearly who we are, and why we're doing what we're doing. These are hard times to be young, and especially for a Christian teenager. We've seen kids having guns pointed in their faces asking if they believe in God! We hope it's a song they can rally around and be encouraged by.

The driving, instantly unforgettable Anything Is Possible is another hit-in-the-making that's also close to the girls hearts. God is a God of love, and Christ is an ever-present friend, but God also does miracles, Kristin comments. People need to know, and be reminded, that He is a God who offers amazing things to those who believe.

The powerful and gorgeous ballad, Give Me One Reason, is both a showcase for ZOEgirl's rich vocal blend, and a very different take on the intersection of romantic and godly love. We consider this to be the most important song on the album, says Chrissy. We all wanted to write a song about abstinence, that would really hit home without coming across as preachy. It's the story of a young girl who's clinging to her boyfriend's affection, but realizes she has to give him up, because she's found the Lord and he can't accept that. Giving up something for God, especially a guy, is something almost any girl can relate to. God is more important than any person or possession. That can be hard, and heart-breaking, but He's worth it.

Alisa, Kristin and Chrissy, all in their early 20s, are accomplished singers, songwriters and dancers from diverse but very complementary backgrounds. Alisa was born and raised in Los Angeles in a Christian home, the daughter of Chuck Girard of Christian/rock pioneers, LoveSong. She spent her early youth, until she was 10, determined to become a world-class gymnast and investing a rigorous 30 hours a week toward that goal before her interests unalterably shifted to music and sharing her faith. Having already studied piano for some time, she began giving concerts as a teenager in California, as well as Arizona and as far north as Canada, all the while becoming deeply involved in inner-city outreach ministry. Both her loving heart and passion for ministry bore fruit when she moved to New York City for two years where she helped to run a church-founded urban youth center for two years.

Kristin came to know the Lord at a young age as she was also raised in a Christian home. As a teenager, Kristin attended a Christian Youth Crusade and it was there that she realized God's calling for her in the music ministry. After her first year of college studying classical voice, she moved to St. Louis to join a contemporary Christian singing group called Spirit Wing. There she had the opportunity to travel and work with the youth throughout Missouri and surrounding states. It was through that experience that she realized it was time to pursue her music ministry full time. God led her to Nashville in 1998 to study music at Belmont University where her sense of calling in music was solid, though her place in ZOEgirl was still a year from realization.

New Jersey native Chrissy Conway was a musically gifted child singing, dancing and performing since she was two. By her teens, Chrissy was in a group signed to a major recording contract out of Atlanta, only to become disillusioned when that group folded, leaving her questioning the purpose and future of her lifetime spent in music. The expectation of an appearance by R&B/pop stars, En Vogue, led her to a youth crusade led by evangelist Greg Lorie, where she was startled to find the message of grace, forgiveness and salvation far more impactive than the concert she'd expected. Committing her own life to Christ that night, Chrissy surrendered her musical endeavors to His will and intentions.

The genesis of ZOEgirl came in early 1999, when Sparrow Records President, Peter York, and renowned artist manager, Norman Miller both friends of the Girard family began to consider Alisa as a perfect candidate for a three-woman group they had been interested in assembling for some time. She accepted the offer they soon made her, and agreed to meet with Kristin, whom Miller had heard of and wanted as the second group member.

The minute I met Alisa, I felt like I'd known her for my whole life, Kristin says. We just had an instant chemistry that I knew could only be confirmation from God. We couldn't wait to start writing and working together.

Two months passed as the search for the artist who would complete ZOEgirl continued, when one day a musician friend of Kristin's told her of a great singer he knew in New Jersey. The singer was Chrissy. It was amazing how it all came about, says Chrissy. I received the phone call from Kristin about the group the day after I prayed to God for a direction in my life. He couldn't have made my direction any clearer. With a divine harmony similar to that which Alisa and Kristin had felt upon their meeting, Chrissy was clearly the person ZOEgirl had awaited. As the threesome began writing together on what would become their new album, they knew they were indeed kindred spirits.

As ZOEgirl embarks on what promises to be a long and exciting journey, the girls' compass and course are clearly set. We want to give kids music that's fun, and that's really going to grab their attention, Alisa concludes, but also show them who this person Jesus is, and let them know they can and should be proud to be associated with Him.
